What to do in Puerto Maldonado: Attractions and practical info

Puerto Maldonado is the main town of the Madre de Dios region, in the Amazon, and the gateway to the Tambopata National Park and Manu Park.

Having developed very quickly in 10 years, partly because of tourism, but especially thanks to the many NGOs that have settled there, we feel a certain disorganization, or a certain “lack” in the tourist offer of the city itself. If you are looking for Puerto Maldonado, you will notice that there is not enough information. Even TripAdvisor, which generally offers a good base, is particularly lopsided when it comes to the Amazonian capital. But in any case, the vast majority of travelers head directly to the surrounding eco-lodges and rarely spend more than half a day in Puerto Maldonado.

As I had the opportunity to spend 3 weeks there (making many trips back to the Tambopata reserve), I challenged myself to look for attractions and cool addresses while walking up and down the streets. notebook in hand.

Here is the little practical guide to Puerto Maldonado:

What to do in the Tambopata?

No doubt: the great attraction of the region is nature! From Puerto Maldonado, travelers head for either the Manu Park or the Tambopata Reserve which is closer.

In the Tambopata are organized many activities of observation of the fauna (parrots and other exotic birds, alligators, monkeys, etc.) and the flora, in addition to boat ride, bathing, fishing, camping, etc. In this region of Amazonia, activities are much more focused on fauna and flora than cultural discovery among local communities as seen in Iquitos in the north of the country, for example. Several ecolodges offer accommodation packages + activities, and there is really something for every budget! Here are the places I tested in the Tambopata and closer to Puerto Maldonado.

1. Discovery of the region with a Tambopata community

These are 4 days of discovery of the Amazon with the local community of Infierno! You will learn more about the traditions of the Ese Eja ethnic group, such as archery, and medicinal plants, presented by the shaman of the community. In addition to the cultural aspect, we discover the Amazon with several activities such as a boat trip to Lake Tres Chimbadas to observe many species of monkeys, parrots, birds, and night out to observe insects and caimans .

In addition to being a unique tour to discover many aspects of the region, the money is invested in youth education programs, local culture conservation and seniors’ health! You can book the tour here.

2. Adventure tour: hiking and cycling in the Amazon

These are 4 days of responsible adventure organized by the agency of Johanna, a French expatriate in Peru (watch her interview here!). A full program: mountain biking through the trails of the Amazon, navigate the Tambopata River in search of caimans and capibaras, swim in the pure water of the Gato Falls, observe the many species of birds colorful in their natural habitat, and participate in a local cooking class. The money from the tour is invested in the reforestation of the Amazon jungle and in the local community of Florida Baja.

3. Discover Sandoval Lake

Only lodge having permission to be on the shores of Lake Sandoval, we really feel privileged to be able to admire the sunset without any tourists around! To get there, it’s a real adventure: 45 min to 1h30 walk (depending on the season and state of the road!) And a boat trip to cross the lake, but the ride is absolutely unforgettable. Check out the Sandoval Lake Lodge and the article on my stay.

4. Refugio Amazonas

This is one of those Robinson Crusoe cabins we dream about in the jungle, but upscale version, with beautiful wooden rooms open in the countryside (and in complete privacy), natural products and specialized guides that offer many activities to observe animals and discover the surroundings. A big crush, definitely! Discover the Refugio Amazonas and the article about my stay.

What to visit in Puerto Maldonado?

Apart from resting watching the children play in the Plaza de Armas – a classic of a trip to Peru – one can still stroll along the main street Leon Velarde, starting with its end which is a small square with a bridge.

Visit the Colca Canyon

If you are traveling through Arequipa on your trip to Peru, a visit to Colca Canyon is a must-see. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon of the United States, it has long been considered the deepest canyon in the world. Recently, he was stuck in 2nd place when it was discovered that Cotahuasi Canyon (3535m), exceeded it by about 130m.

The landscape is quite dry, but the road to the canyon is impressive. In the distance are several volcanoes and glaciers, including the Mismi (5597m) which is the source of the Amazon River.

To help you organize your next visit, here is my guide to the Colca Canyon with the main attractions and all the practical information!

What to do and see in Colca Canyon?
1. The landscapes of Colca

The Colca Canyon is great with the Colca River (374km long) which meanders it and the numerous terraced mountainside crops used since the Inca era!

On the way from Arequipa, we come across a few isolated houses, small villages and the national reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, the natural habitat of vicuñas, the elegant cousin of the llama, who produces the finest fiber in the world. There are also Andean flamingos, and all framed by large volcanoes such as Ampato (6310 m), Sabancaya (5076 m), Hualca Hualca (6025 m), Huarancante (5426 m) and the Chucura (5200 m). A whole panorama!

The highest point of the course is 4900m above sea level. Not far from there, the guides are used to making a stop so that we can stretch our legs. In a burst of enthusiasm, I had the very bad idea to get out of the van and climb very quickly a little stop to go see “small houses” that intrigued me.

At such an altitude, changing so suddenly from a state of rest to a high activity made me sick and this condition lasted for hours: nausea, headache, dizziness. And worse (you have the right to laugh!), Arriving at the top I realized that these small houses were only toilets. Do not do like me!

2. The Condor’s Cross

The Condor Cross or Cruz del Condor is a must see in the Colca Canyon. Down below, sneaks the Colca River at 1200m and opposite stands the Mismi Volcano at 5547m.

It is a viewpoint that offers not only a superb view of the canyon, but also a strategic place to observe the Condor of the Andes, one of the largest birds in the world (it can reach a span of 3.50 meters!)

Seeing him soar, it is easy to understand that he has been venerated by the Incas.

Tip of friend: go there in the morning, it is easier to see at this time of the day!
Visit the cross of the condor: take a local bus to Cabanaconde (Yanque 4 soles, Chivay 5 soles).

3. The villages of the Canyon

There are several villages in the Colca Valley, here are the main ones:

Chivay: at 3700m altitude, it is the main point of arrival in the canyon (and the most touristy). There are many restaurants, hotels, inns, etc., and several buses to other destinations in the canyon. Also, its belvedere offers a beautiful panorama on the region. At 3km (in colectivo 2 soles) are the thermal waters of La Calera (17 soles) a good option to relax with long hours of driving.
Cabanaconde: village of 3000 inhabitants, it is the hikers’ must-haves since it is the start of the trek in the canyon. Also, 20min walk you will find the watchtower Cejana or that of Achachihua.
Yanque: 7km from Chivay, it is the village that has the prettiest main square in the region (its church is very pretty!). Here, almost every morning at 7am, children in traditional costumes dance to typical music: it’s a must see!

There are also other small typical villages like Tapay, Ichupampa, Maca, Madrigal, Lari, Achoma, Tuti, Sibayo, Callalli, Caylloma, Tisco, San Antonio de Chuca, Coporaque, Majes, Huambo, Huanca, Lluta.

4. Make a trek in the Colca Canyon

And if you are a fan of trekking, know that it is possible to do treks of 2, 3 or 4 days in the Colca Canyon. For those who do not like organized excursions, it is easy to do a trek without a guide because the trails are well marked.

You do not have to be an experienced hiker because the way is pretty simple, but you have to have some physical fitness.

The starting point of the main trail is the town of Cabanaconde.

Make the trek in 1 day: you can go to Sangalle (the oasis) called the Oasis – and go up (3h to 5h return).

Trek in 2 days: there are several options for 2 days in Colca

1st day: go to San Juan de Chuccho and spend the night
2nd day: do Coshñirwa, Malata and Sangalle

or Sleep in Coshñirwa or Malata to enjoy the oasis the next day.

Tip of friend: if you have a very tight itinerary and do not want to sleep 1 night in the canyon before starting the trek, it is technically possible to leave the same day of Arequipa. But as it is better to start early the trek, take the bus Arequipa-Cabanaconde (5-6h ride) so take the bus 1 or 3am, you will not regret it! And plan enough water, with the heat, it disappears quickly!

Visit Machu Picchu: my best advice!

A must-see for a tour in Peru and the greatest symbol of the Inca civilization, its name means “old mountain” in Quechua.

Named one of the 7 new wonders of the world, Machu Picchu is now Peru’s # 1 attraction and one of the most important archaeological sites in South America.

Here is our complete Guide, updated in 2019 with all the new practical information, to know how to visit Machu Picchu:

How to choose and buy tickets, understand new groups, how to get to Machu Picchu by train, trek or on foot, how long to plan on the site, what to see and do on the site Machu Picchu … and much more!

So, how to visit Machu Picchu? Where to buy tickets? Or sleep?

1. All about tickets
How to choose the right ticket?

Here is everything you need to know about the different tickets to Machu Picchu. There are 3 * ticket types for Machu Picchu:

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu
Machu Picchu + Mountain Machu Picchu

* In reality there is a 4th ticket which is the museum of Machu Picchu, which does not include the entrance to Machu Picchu and is not located on the citadel. Buy it directly at the museum entrance if you decide to visit it, it’s better.
Machu Picchu Ticket

This ticket only gives access to the site of Machu Picchu.

When buying, you must choose the time of entry:

6h
7h
8h
9am
10am
11h
12
13h
14h

Morning tickets are the most popular and fly away faster so do not wait until the last minute to buy it!
Machu Picchu ticket with Huayna Picchu

The Huayna Picchu or Wayna Picchu is the mountain behind all the classic photos of the site. It rises up to 2700m above sea level and from the top, we get an impressive bird’s-eye view of the site.

Is the Huayna Picchu difficult?

The climb is quite demanding and constant, with stairs, as well as narrow and steep paths. So yes, you have to be fit to ride it.

If you suffer from vertigo, it is better to avoid this climb because you may not necessarily have a good time. On the other hand, for a good dose of adrenaline, it is the ideal choice!

The round trip is done in 2h-2h30

When buying, choose:

Entry on the site at 6am and Wayna Picchu 7h-8h
Entry on the site at 7am and Wayna Picchu 7h-8h
Entry on the site at 8am and Wayna Picchu 10h-11h

As the Wayna Picchu is very popular, you must book several months in advance!
Machu Picchu Ticket with Machu Picchu Mountain

Do not confuse the Machu Picchu mountain with the Machu Picchu site. It is the mountain in front of Wayna Picchu.

It is higher than the latter (3082m) and offers another point of view on the site and the surroundings.

Is Machu Picchu Mountain difficult?

The route is longer, but less demanding than the Wayna Picchu, with more established trails, a less steep climb. It is a better option if you are traveling with children or are afraid of being dizzy.

Anyway at altitude, we lack of breath, so take your time to climb!

The round trip is in 3 hours.

Entrance to the site at 6am and Machu Picchu Mountain 7h-8h
Entrance to the site at 7am and Machu Picchu Mountain 7h-8h
Entrance to the site at 8am and Machu Picchu Mountain 9h-10h

The Machu Picchu Mountain is less touristy than the Wayna Picchu, but you still have to book a few weeks in advance.

What is the difference between Wayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain?

If in addition to the information above, you want to know more to make the right choice of ticket, the best is to consult my comparative article between Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain!
What does the time of entry on the ticket mean?

For Machu Picchu, this is the time from which one can enter.

For the Waynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, this is the time slot in which you must absolutely arrive.

For example with a ticket Machu Picchu 6h + Wayna Picchu 7h-8h: I can access the site of Machu Picchu from 6am, but I must absolutely start the ascent of the Waynapicchu between 7am and 8am.
How to buy tickets for Machu Picchu?

Tickets can be purchased online or on site
Buy Machu Picchu ticket online easily

It can be complicated to buy Machu Picchu tickets on the official Machu Picchu website because it is sometimes slow and there are some bugs that happen from time to time that prevent online purchase.

It even happens that some do not receive confirmation of their tickets!

If you want to avoid this hassle, there is a slightly more expensive, but very effective and fast alternative, which is to go through GetYourGuide, an intermediary platform that allows you to buy official tickets for Machu Picchu.

3 types of tickets are available, to buy them, just click on the buttons below.

Cusco Guide: what to see and what to do

“Navel of the world” at the time of the Incas, actively coveted by the Spanish conquistadors, heritage of UNESCO since 1983 and object of fascination of travelers and historians, welcome to Cusco. Although it is the starting point of all the excursions leading to Machu Picchu, it is a city that deserves to be visited. We could spend days browsing the streets discovering a new charming corner, a nice little restaurant or an architectural detail.

But by the way, do we say Cusco or Cuzco? In fact, both spellings are officially accepted. On the other hand, Peruvians always write Cusco and that is why we prefer to use this form.

Be aware that flights to Peru will take you to Lima. You will need to arrange a transfer to Cusco, either by bus or plane to Cusco Airport (Alejandro Velasco Astete).

Since today’s weather is a rare commodity, choices must be made. Here are 5 attractions not to be missed in Cusco, during your trip to Peru.

1. The Place d’Armes

Place d’Armes is still the central heart of Latin America’s major cities. It is therefore definitely a strategic place to start a visit. It is here that begins the famous celebration of the Inti Raymi the great Inca festival in honor of the sun on June 24th.

There is the magnificent Baroque cathedral, built in the middle of the 17th century on the Inca Wiracocha Palace. She is huge and loaded with details. If I have a particular affection for the Cathedral of Arequipa, it must be admitted that that of Cusco is breathtaking, especially if you are art lovers (there are beautiful examples of paintings from the school of Cusco) and history. We offer a guided tour at the entrance. I highly recommend it if you do not want to miss anything. We enter the cathedral via Iglesia del Triunfo, the first Christian church in the city.

The Compañía Church, built by the Jesuits on the ancient palace of the Inca Huayna Capac, is also a must-see attraction. Among other things, there are beautiful examples of Métis art.

Visit the cathedral: Tuesday to Saturday 10h-11h30 14h-17h30, Sunday 14h-17h30, entrance 25 soles
Visit the Church of Compañía: Tuesday to Saturday 11h-12h 15h-16h, free entry.

2. The Coricancha

Dedicated to the sun, the Coricancha, sometimes written Koricancha or Qoricancha, was the most sacred temple of the Inca empire. It is said that up to 4000 priests lived in its enclosure. Richly decorated with gold, silver and precious stones, it was unfortunately destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors. On its walls was built the Santo Domingo Convent around the middle of the 16th century. It is possible to see some original walls, consisting of large blocks of stone perfectly nested, a typical Inca construction process that can also Machu Picchu, for example.

Visit the Coricancha: Santo Domingo chapel Monday to Saturday from 8:30 am to 5 pm, Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm; museum Monday to Sunday 9 am-5pm, entrance 10 soles, guided tour 10 soles.

3. San Blas district

Travelers often forget to leave the area around Place d’Armes, for fear of getting lost or lack of time. However, everyone who has traveled the San Blas district will tell you: it is charming. Small, steep and narrow streets, white houses, small craft shops, cafes, restaurants, it is a romantic place and offers, as a bonus, a superb view of the city. Go ahead without hesitation, it is only a few blocks from the Place d’Armes. Do not forget to climb slowly or you will be quickly out of breath because of the altitude.

4. The ruins

Cusco having been the capital of the Inca empire, it is not surprising that there are many archaeological sites nearby. There are four sites not to be missed: the fortress of Puca Pucara, Tambo Machay, Qenqo and Sacsayhuaman, where the celebration of the Inti Raymi takes place. They are all close to each other, within a radius of 8 km from Cusco, so they are easily accessible. In addition, you will have a breathtaking view of Cusco, as evidenced by this photo taken from Sacsayhuaman.

5. The museums of Cusco

Like any city with a great history, Cusco has many interesting museums. I concede, with so many places to visit, museums are not necessarily a priority. But know that the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (Plaza Nazarenas, 231, Cusco) presents a beautiful collection of gold objects, beautiful works of the colonial era (mainly paintings and sculptures), as well as beautiful exhibitions on Pre-Columbian cultures: Inca, Nazca, Mochica, Huari, Chimu and Chancay. This is an opportunity to discover the great civilizations of Peru, which we finally talk about very little, compared to the Incas. You can end the visit with a meal or coffee at MAP Café, one of the best restaurants in Cusco. You will find it in the patio.

Admission: 20 soles, 10 soles students
Hours of operation: museum Monday to Sunday 9 am-10pm, Map Café Monday to Sunday 11 am-10pm

The population of Cusco is a tourist paradise that keeps within itself more than four centuries of architectural history.
The buildings of this city show excellent engineering works, which exceed many techniques used by construction professionals of the time.
Knowing all the architectural creations of the place is one of the best ways to appreciate and enjoy every place you visit in Cusco.

Cusco History of Architecture

The city of Cusco is the product of the clash of two cultures that marked this territory forever.
In the first instance, the Inca empire marked an important boost in the history of Cusco. Pachacutec decided to rebuild the city of Cusco and perform it with new architecture because, according to his knowledge, it was poorly designed. On the other hand, the reconstruction of Cusco began by channeling streams and all the water from rivers and ditches.
The history of this city shows its beginnings at least 1,000 years before Christ, and of course, it cannot be denied that its perfect architecture is due to the Inca empire.

Architecture of the City of Cusco

The construction of this city seizes many puma-shaped temples, as a symbol that this animal has everything necessary to overcome. The head of the puma represented the strength of the town, and the body of the animal was the representation of the city that extended.
The Inca army is not only historically characterized by its battles, but also because it made all the architectural pieces and buildings of what is now known as tourist sites in the city of Cusco.
Thanks to the locals this population can make themselves known to the world and show the excellent engineering work carried out by the Incas.

What are the most important architectural buildings in Cusco?

The Incas focused on creating temples and palaces on one floor, but with such sublime perfection that many centuries later they can continue to be the object of tourism for the world in the city of Cusco.
In general, the Incas are admired even today because their architectural works have a fantastic quality in the polishing of the rocks.

Architecture of the City of Cusco
Many scientists who have visited Cusco try to reaffirm theories made by television channels and professionals in the area of construction. The buildings of Cusco are almost perfect even when the iron had not been discovered.
There is no city in the world that has as many architectural monuments surviving the different climatic changes and sedimentation processes like Cusco.
Despite the fact that the city was subjected to an earthquake in 1950 that greatly shook this town – leaving more than 3,000 houses in ruins – the locals managed to restore the affected monuments so as not to lose their Inca traditions.

Historians reach conclusions that show that the Incas had an ingenuity from the experience they had with the rocks used, and the use they gave to the tools available at the time.
Among the most important buildings or pieces of the city of Cusco are:

Twelve Angle Stone

The main square is located two blocks from this enigmatic place, it is perhaps the most famous stone in all of Peru, because it has a perfect countenance that shows perfectly handmade cuts – without the use of any type of current machine -.
There is no arithmetic explanation of what calculations they used to make this beautiful monument that is a privileged heritage for the city of Cusco.

Goverment house

This house is a sign that the architecture of Cusco is a place of infinities to explore. The colonial house or government house was elaborated for the commanders or leaders of the Spanish empire after having arrived in these lands in search of conquest and exploitation of resources.
Today this architectural work is used as a historical monument to receive people from all parts of the world.

Santa Clara Arch

It is located a few blocks from the main square of the city and is a symbol of the Peru-Bolivian confederation, the construction of this arch was on the occasion of the celebration for the union between Peru and Bolivia in the now mythical confederation. The architectural design is derived from Roman bases with columns and pedestals.

The Inca wall

Strolling through this majestic city without bumping into places that clothe the best of the Inca culture is practically impossible, as Cusco preserves the best palaces and buildings of the Inca empire.
This wall is formed by perfectly aligned and united blocks using the stones as the only material, the more this beautiful wall is observed, tourists wonder how they were placed so that they remain static for so many centuries.

Macchu Picchu

The beauty that this place has has no comparison with other places in the world, this city originated thanks to a planning process that the Incas had to build each of its parts.
The architecture of this place implies that the stones are perfectly carved. There is no known scientific book that explains how it is possible that the stones can be built perfectly without the use of any type of glue. Today this place is among the seven wonders of the world.
Of course, to be able to name each of the places of striking architecture of the city of Cusco – and its explanations – it would be necessary to write a complete encyclopedia housing the different mathematical theories for the calculations of the buildings.

The wealth of Cusco has nothing to do with economic sources from tourism, the wealth that really stands out in this city are the stories found in each building made in the city by the ancestors of the current inhabitants.

In the past, if you wanted to visit a tourist place, you should look for information about it in tourism books – and like everything else in life – in this type of books there were positive and negative things about certain places, which generated doubts about visiting it or not. .
Nowadays, thanks to technologies, keeping informed about a place is as easy as blinking, online traffic shows in a few seconds the thousands of options to go on vacation.
Peru is one of the best options in Latin America for tourism, especially if you visit the city of Cusco and its hundreds of tourist attractions.

Likewise, one of the main reasons for coming to Cusco on vacation is to be able to visit The Rainbow Mountain, located 6 kilometers from the Pampachiri community, and about 100 kilometers away from the city of Cusco.
The main attraction of this place are the hillsides and summits that over the years acquired different colors and shades, product of the melting of the ice and the different minerals that were formed under sedimentation millions of years ago.
Before giving an exact explanation of what are the steps to follow to get to the Rainbow Mountain, it is necessary to know what is the price to get there and what are the best options to hire a tour guide service.

Prices and Rates to Visit the Rainbow Mountain

To make an ideal quotation corresponding to the visit of The Rainbow Mountain, it is advisable to use several web pages that function as travel agencies and have the best guides to make the tour properly.

2.- The Qoricancha

Then we visit the temple of Qoricancha, the highest expression of Inca architecture and engineering. The Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, is also currently the Convent of Santo Domingo.

3.- Sacsayhuaman

The impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman is strategically built on a hill from which you can appreciate all of Cusco. It is famous for its huge carved stones, some of which are 9 meters or 30 feet high and weigh more than 350 tons.

4.- Qenqo

Located four kilometers northeast of the city of Cusco, it has the archeological groups of Q’enqo Grande and Q’enqo Chico.

Etymologically, it means labyrinth or zigzag, it fulfilled a purely religious function, being in the outer part an amphitheater in semicircular form with trapezoidal niches and a monolith that simulates to be a puma which measures approximately six meters.

5.- Puca Pucara

Puca Pucara means “red fortress”, because the calcareous stones with which it is constructed have acquired the red coloration of the ground, very abundant in iron. It is alleged that it had the function of guarding Tambomach’ay, an important palace in the Inkario. But in turn, because of its architectural layout and the existence of fountains, aqueducts and multiple enclosures, it was a “tambo”, that is to say, a collective shelter that offered inn and food to the travelers, as well as to the entourage that had to accompany To the Inka at his retreat in Tambomach’ay.

6.- Tambomachay

Tambomachay, is located about 8 kms. North of Cusco and very close to the ruins of Puca Pucara, it is an archaeological site that was destined to the cult of water and so that the head of the Inca Empire could rest. This place is also called Baños del Inca. It consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and several cascades of water that run through the rocks. What is surprising of this is that of a main waterfall, the Incas created 2 secondary cascades, which are exactly alike. That is, if one places two empty bottles, one in each waterfall, the two fill at the same time.

Itinerary

1.- The sacred valley of the Incas:

In the 15th century, two Inca sovereigns, Pachacuti Yupanqui and Tupac Yupanqui, created an immense empire in South America, which ran from southern Colombia to central Chile and occupied much of the Andean territories of Peru, Bolivia and North of Argentina. The empire of the Four Regions of the Sun, or Tahuantinsuyo, stretched over more than 4,000 kilometers from north to south and was articulated by an impressive road network, 40,000 kilometers long. The neuralgic center of that powerful state was located in the heart of the Peruvian sierra: in a wide area at more than 3,000 meters altitude where the city of Cusco, capital of the Empire and court of the Incas, rose. This area was crossed by the denominated Sacred Valley, a territory that extends along the river Vilcanota-Urubamba, of extraordinary agricultural wealth and marked by a series of splendid Inca fortresses.
The Vilcanota was a sacred river for the Incas, who saw in this course of water the terrestrial counterpart of the Milky Way. The river is born in the glaciers of the mountain range of Vilcanota and changes its name to the one of Urubamba in its descent towards the thicket of the Amazon rainforests in the Andean region. In its route unites two of the most sacred mountains for that pre-Columbian civilization: the snow-covered one of Ausangate and the snowed one of the Salcantay. Its waters are nourished by snow from the snowmelt of the Veronica or Wacay Wilca, a female mountain considered the “wife” of the Salcantay. Just at the edge of a slope that descends from the Salcantay, on a promontory surrounded by the waters of the Urubamba River, the Incas built the extraordinary ceremonial citadel of Machu Picchu, royal residence of the first emperors and sacred center for worship of the surrounding mountains .

1.- Chinchero:

On the way back to Cusco we will visit the picturesque village of Chinchero, where the remains of the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui are found. You will admire your well preserved Inca wall in the main square and visit the beautiful colonial temple with interesting frescoes on the porch, built on the bases of an Inca building.

2.- Maras

Located in the province of Urubamba at 3300 m.s.n.m. From there you can appreciate the Vilcanota mountain range and the snowy peaks: El Chikón (5530 m.s.n.m), “Putukisi”, La Verónica. Nowadays this picturesque town keeps attractive of the pre-hispanic, colonial and republican period, emphasizing in the town streets and colonial fronts with shields of the nobles and caciques of the centuries XVII and XVIII.

3.-Salineras:

This place is known as the salt mines consists of about 400 small salt pits. It is built in the mountain of kachi qata, where it comes in salt water. This place was very important since the Inca times because the Inca gave a very valuable use for food such as charki or stuffed meat. Nowadays salt is still being extracted to export Asia Europe, to obtain the salt the settlers have to fill the well after allowing the water to evaporate and the salt remains if it is carried out for a month or more until obtaining the volume and The solides of salt.

4.- Moray

It is about 7 km southwest of Maras and 53 km from Cusco with altitude of 3,385 m.s.n.m; Is a unique archaeological group of its kind in the region. They are giant natural holes that were used by the Inkas who built terraces or agricultural platforms with their respective irrigation canals, is therefore a prototype of greenhouse, this place is where incredible advances were made in agriculture.

5.- Ollantaytambo:

Legend has it that Ollantay (the Titan of the Andes) of plebeian origin, loved the princess Cusi Coyllor (the joyful star) daughter of King Inca Pachacútec, who disagreed with this love.
Pachacútec sent the princess to a house of Virgin, Ollántay tried to kidnap her from there, without succeeding and managed to flee. From the fortress that Ollántay had in command he rebelled against Pachacútec, and after bloody battles he was defeated, but the generosity of Pachacútec made him to forgive the life of Ollántay.

The foundation of Ollantaytambo is attributed to Ollántay, and prevails the military fortress that protected this zone of the valley, strategically located between two mountains. Nowadays this fortress can be seen, as well as the rich Inca archaeological sites, made up of the Inti temple, the Incamisana, the baths of the Ñustas (princesses), the Chullpas of Cachiccata, a group of terraces symmetrically staggered and Very steep on the side of a hill.
At the summit of the archaeological complex there are six monoliths of enormous size, assembled with incredible precision, which have engraved mysterious motifs of Inca iconography.

The present town of Ollantaytambo, has many houses built on the bases of the old Inca town, where they inhabit natives of rooted ancestral customs.

The complexity and beauty of Inca buildings and the contemporary people, the vast agricultural complex, great administrative and social center, religious and military, is considered by many scientists and historians as one of the most important living museums in the world.

Ollantaytambo is located 97 km (60 miles) from Cusco, 2,846 m.s.n.m. (9,337 feet). Train station to Machu Picchu.

6.- Artisanal market of Pisac:

Located 30 km from the city of Cusco, the main square of Pisac is home to this market, a colorful and lively place, where the most famous handicrafts from Cusco are displayed, among handicrafts, textiles, ponchos, bags, etc. , And ceramic handicrafts, which are reproductions of Inca archaeological pieces, such as keros (ceremonial vessels), necklaces, etc. Indigenous merchants and craftsmen from many villages, dressed in their traditional costumes, attend this fair.

7.- Archaeological center of Pisac :

The most extensive of the fortresses of the Sacred Valley and of all the Inca civilization is that of Pisac.

Nestled on an abrupt rocky promontory, the roads leading to it defy precipices and traverse tunnels dug into the rock. The heart of the settlement includes a temple dedicated to the Sun or Intihuatana, which includes some of the most exquisite examples of Inca stone architecture. The sector called Kalla Q’asa also has a chain of ritual baths.

The heights of Pisac visually dominate the rocky cliffs across the throat of Quitamayo, whose caves were used for funeral purposes. In times of the Incas it was frequent that the bodies of the deceased were placed in caves or machays, which were called mallquihuasis or “houses of mummified ancestors”. Unfortunately, most of the burials in the necropolis of Pisac were plundered by treasure hunters before archaeologists could study them. From a military point of view, this fortified enclave at the foot of the eastern Andes controlled the access to Paucartambo and to the leafy jungles of the Peruvian Amazon. However, in spite of its strategic location, no evidence is known that attributed to Pisac a prominent role during the Inca resistance to the Spanish occupation. An imposing set of cultivated fields descend down the steep slopes of the mountain, towards the colonial town of Pisac, now famous for its picturesque Sunday market. In the background stands the figure of the Pachatusan, a sacred mountain to which the Incas revered as “support of the world”.

The ultimate blog post for information on Cusco Airport in 2018 is right here – how to get to and from the airport safely, info on the facilities and more!

Cusco Airport, Peru – or to give it its official title: Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, is Cusco’s only airport. The airport has consistently ranked as Peru’s second most important air terminal, after Lima Airport (Jorge Chávez International Airport), annually handling close to 2,500,000 national and international passengers.

The airport is located 5.5 km (3.4 miles) from the Plaza de Armas in the historic centre of Cusco. The approximate journey time is 20 minutes by taxi.

Taxis

Taxis are by far the most popular mode of transportation for people to and from Cusco Airport. On arrival at Cusco airport you will find an abundance of taxi drivers offering their services.

At the baggage collection carousels within the terminal there are two small desks offering airport transfers. Llama Taxis are one these, their fleet of taxis comprises of modern and safe black Toyota saloons. The price from Cusco Airport to Plaza de Armas or any of Cusco’s tourist hotels (within the city) is 45/55 Soles (US$15).

Beyond this just outside the door to the building to your left, a vast quantity of taxi drivers congregate (you can´t miss them). In typical Peruvian taxi driver style, they can be a little overbearing and very persistent, but don’t let this put you off. No taxis are metered here so you will need to agree a price first before getting in. The price of a taxi from Cusco Airport to the historic centre of Cusco is around 10 – 15 soles (US$ 3.50 – 5.00) for the 20 minute journey. Be aware that taxi drivers will start by offering a price of 25 – 30 Soles (US$ 7.50 – 10.00) or even higher. You will need patience and the ability to negotiate firmly to ensure you get a fair price. Taxi drivers are required to pay a 2 Soles parking fee when leaving Cusco Airport, and often ask for this from the passenger in addition to the pre-agreed fare, be firm and inform them this was not the agreement.

1. Don’t just be a typical tourist.

Yes, Peru is famous for Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but that’s not the only place you should visit. Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon on earth is definitely a place to discover as well as Lake Titicaca at more than 4,000m above sea level home to the floating islands. And let’s not forget the hidden gems most travelers don’t know about: the Secret Slave Tunnels in Chincha, Huacachina the desert oasis home to the biggest sand dunes in South America, or the Paracas National Reserve where the desert meets with the sea to create unbelievable scenery. Whatever way you get to or from Machu Picchu, make sure you stop along the way to see these incredible destinations as you will probably only come to Peru one time in your life.

2. Learn how to spot fake money

Unfortunately, Peru is one of the world leaders in counterfeiting money, with bogus versions of both the local currency of nuevo soles and foreign currencies such as the dollar or the euro being produced here. As such, here are the details to look for:

3. Eat the lunch “menu”

Cities and towns in Peru are filled with small restaurants offering a special fixed-price “menu” for lunch. These simple establishments are typically family-run and offer a choice of two or three different meal options (often with a starter, drink and even dessert included) for as little as $3 USD. This is one of the best ways to get the most out of your trip to Peru, both by saving money and taking the chance to taste the excellent local cuisine.

4. Don’t be shy about haggling

Like many places in the world, Peru has a culture of haggling. Prices in many markets are flexible and sellers will frequently offer an initial price that is substantially higher than the actual value of the product being sold. While a favorable exchange rate compared to your home country may make it tempting to just pay the original asking price and avoid the hassle, you’ll definitely save quite a bit of money (which can, in turn, be spent on other activities or souvenirs) if you put in the effort to bargain a little bit. A good rule of thumb is to have the price that you’re willing to pay in mind before you approach the vendor. Be firm about your budget limits, but also polite and willing to negotiate. Eventually you should arrive at a price which is fair for both parties.

5. Don’t rush

Peru is one of the best countries in the world for travelers: with its incredibly diverse variety of natural wonders and its world-famous cultural and historical sights, there is something here for virtually everyone. Because it has so much to offer, many people who come to Peru are a bit overwhelmed with their options. It can definitely be tempting to rush from place to place in an attempt to see everything. It’s worth bearing in mind that it’s totally impossible to see every amazing thing that this country has to offer in one short trip–an entire lifetime may not even be enough! With that in mind, the best idea is to spend a good amount of time in each destination and truly get to know it before moving on to the next.

6. Bring toilet paper and soap everywhere

There’s no delicate way to put this, but the public bathrooms in Peru are not always kept to particularly high standards. Only the most upscale establishments will be stocked with toilet paper or soap, so you’ll be thankful later if you remember to carry some with you at all times for when the need arises. It’s also important to remember that in Peru, like most of Latin America, you typically dispose of toilet paper in bins next to the toilet rather than by flushing it, due to outdated sewer systems.

7. Buses are better than planes

While there is a budding budget airline industry in South America, the frequent delays and canceled flights can become annoying very quickly. The primary form of long-distance travel has become buses for most travelers in Peru due to the scenery you get to enjoy. Use these long-distance rides to practice Spanish, get some reading done, research your next destination, etc.

8. Set prices in advance

This is another good tip for saving money while traveling. It’s always smart to negotiate the price for services before you partake. This especially means asking and negotiating with a taxi driver what the final price will be before you even enter the vehicle. It’s also important to clarify what exactly is included with your purchase in order to avoid hidden charges (for instance, if you’re taking a tour, are all fees, taxes, entrances to national parks, etc. included?).

9. Check the weather

Peru contains an incredible variety of climates (30 out of 32 possible types, according to one classification) despite being only about one-sixth the size of the continental United States. Within its borders, you will find dry desert, sandy coastal beach, chilly highlands, tropical rainforest and more. Two destinations can seem very close to one another on a map, but in reality have drastically different climates. For this reason, it’s important that you regularly check the weather when traveling to different areas of Peru in order to avoid torrential rain, mudslides, snow and other potential hazards.

10. Do your research

Tourist agencies and transit companies are abundant in Peru. These can range from very cheap options where safety and comfort can be a major issue to luxurious options rivaling first-class plane travel. It’s definitely smart to thoroughly research your options before you travel over-land in Peru. We may be biased, but for your money, Cusco Manta provides the best combination of safety, convenience, comfort and price available–make sure to check out what we offer while you’re doing your research.

*2018 Updated Information* I finally got to climb to the top of Rainbow Mountain and must say it was everything I expected and even more! The mountain itself is incredible, and its easy to see where it gets its name Rainbow Mountain from as you can see from my photos below.

Here, I plan to give you a detailed account of my experience and show you that no matter what your age, it is very easy to visit Rainbow Mountain any time of the year!

We left Cusco for Rainbow Mountain at 3:30am on Sunday morning (tours operate every day – see here for more tour information). We booked via RainbowMountainTravels.com who are the best Rainbow Mountain tour operator in the area. Because this tour departs early, it guaranteed us to be 1 of the first groups at the top Rainbow Mountain.

As well as this, they offered oxygen tanks which are important as you do reach over 15,000 feet above sea level! Not all tour companies offer this, so this is definitely something to look out for when choosing the best Rainbow Mountain tour operator.

Vinicunca, AKA Rainbow Mountain, is located about 3 ½ hours from Cusco by minibus. Found in the Peruvian Andes, Rainbow Mountain – as you could probably guess – is famed for its natural, multi-coloured beauty. It has only recently been discovered, but is fast becoming one of THE places to visit in South America.

Travelling by bus in Peru can sometimes be a little unsafe. Peru Hop, Cruz del Sur and similar companies offer a great and safe way to travel around Peru by bus, and these companies really focus on the safety aspect.

Of course here at Peru Hop we are a little biased. We think that the best way to get from Lima to Cusco by bus, or Cusco to Lima by bus, is with Peru Hop. However we also respect companies like Cruz del Sur as they have invested a lot of money in their safety issues and offer travellers a safe way to travel around Peru. So what are the positives and negatives of travelling to Machu Picchu by bus instead of taking a flight to Cusco?
